The launch of a new website often marks the start of an exciting adventure. For the Sandbar Sofa Surfers, the creation of their website was more than just building an online presence—it was about crafting a space that reflects their unique spirit and connects with their community. This post explores the story behind the Sandbar Sofa Surfers website, highlighting the key steps, challenges, and milestones that shaped its beginning. Still a Work in Progress.
Finding the Purpose Behind the Website
Every website needs a clear purpose to guide its design and content. For the Sandbar Sofa Surfers, the goal was to create a welcoming hub where visitors could learn about their activities, share stories, and engage with like-minded people. Jeremie focused on making the site easy to navigate and rich with information that captures the surfer's essence.
To achieve this, he started by answering important questions:
What do visitors want to find on the site?
How can the website reflect my and our community’s values?
What features will encourage interaction and return visits?
How can I make Sandbar Sofa Surfers more than me with a camera uploading surf videos to my YouTube channel.
Designing with the Community in Mind
Design plays a crucial role in how visitors experience a website. The Sandbar Sofa Surfers wanted a look that felt relaxed and inviting, mirroring their laid-back approach to life. Always sharing the truthful moments captured.
Building Content That Resonates
Content is the heart of any website. For the Sandbar Sofa Surfers, storytelling was key. Including:
Personal stories of adventures
Tips and guides related to their interests
Updates on upcoming community and statewide surfing events, contests and gatherings
fun and comedic sketches
Parody Films
Safety (Equipment and Conditions)
Overcoming Technical Challenges
Launching a website involves technical hurdles. The Sandbar Sofa Surfers faced challenges such as: Money and Financing, What to Do and How to do it with no positive support structure or foundation.
I have a dollar and a dream and a phone with a camera was my beginning. I really have been hard on myself.
Lessons Learned and Future Plans
The journey of creating the Sandbar Sofa Surfers website offered valuable lessons:
Clear goals guide every stage of development
Design should reflect the community’s personality
Authentic content builds trust and engagement
Technical preparation prevents launch-day issues
Listening to users drives continuous improvement
Looking ahead, the plans are to expand the site with more interactive tools and multimedia content, and links to some local shops and local creators, surfers, ding repair, and iconic places like KONA. It'd be cool to have a link for ZuluBoi also.. The aim to keep the website fresh and relevant as the community grows.

...Once they called me Pearl Jam, and then they started calling me Pearl Jelly, cause Jam doesn't surf like that.
